As an extension to the PSHE curriculum, pupils were given the opportunity to visit HMP Altcourse in Liverpool last Tuesday. The trip was arranged by our Safer Schools Police Liaison Officer PC Wise and it allowed pupils to see for themselves what prison life is like as well as, more particularly, what it is like for employees and prisoners.
HPM Altcourse is a local prison in Liverpool which receives young offenders and adult male prisoners from the courts in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales. The prison can accommodate 1,324 prisoners in safe custody. As stated on their website, HPM Altcourse is proud of its excellent reputation and the differences that it believes it can make through its constructive regime and prisoner management systems. On Thursday, pupils who had met their personalised targets were invited to experience gorge walking at Oaklands Outdoor Centre just outside Llanrwst, North Wales. Gorge walking involves scrambling, climbing, sliding, jumping, swimming and squeezing your way up or down a river/gorge. It was a thrilling experience but boys were thankful for the wetsuits provided, despite it being mild weather for this time of year. It’s one of the most popular activities at Oaklands and our boys were able to enjoy a full day out, arriving home just after 6pm ready for a warm bath.
