Subject Leader- Mr A Pritchard
Teacher- Ms E Macready
The primary aims of the Physical Education Department at Kilgarth is to offer each pupil an opportunity to experience a wide range of sporting activities and to instil in them the importance of exercise on the maintenance of physical and emotional wellbeing.
We believe that all individuals can enjoy sport, and that it is our role to help the individual find the particular sport or sports they have a passion for, and then encourage and support their progression pathway.
All pupils are encouraged to set and achieve progressive sporting goals as well as recognise and consistently demonstrate what constitutes an effective team player.
Good sportsmanship is promoted by staff and expected by pupils at all times as is the importance of always giving your best in all sporting situations.
Teaching: Key stage 3
The importance of PE as a developmental tool is supported at Kilgarth by the fact that each pupil has 100 minutes of timetabled PE each week.
Pupils at KS3 follow the National Curriculum Programme of Study and experience sports and activities across all six strands of the PE curriculum.
When providing a broad spectrum of sporting experiences we endeavour to make use of the many local sporting facilities the Wirral has to offer.
We have recently updated our assessment procedures to incorporate the ‘new’ 1-9 grading system and this is now being used to effectively track all pupils’ progress across each sport they access throughout our curriculum.
Teaching: Key Stage 4
During KS4 we offer each pupil the opportunity to study the Edexcel BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Sport which has given us extremely impressive results over recent years.
This challenging but rewarding qualification has two components, outlined in the box below:
BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Sport
Teacher Assessment Pupils complete a series of coursework assignments which are assessed by Mr Pritchard before being both internally and externally verified to ensure they meet the appropriate grading criteria. 80%
External Assessment Pupils sit a 75 minute long online assessment. (in the event of an unsatisfactory result pupils can re-sit the exam before their school leaving date) 20%

Exercise is valued at Kilgarth and as such sporting activities are offered each day during break and social activities. This gives pupils the option of an extra 45 minutes of sporting activities per week, with a wide array of different sports offered both on and off site during social times.
Tuesday/ Wednesday After School Sports Club
All pupils are invited to take part in an extra hours sport after school. The sports on offer are on a rolling timetable but the programme is designed to both satisfy the interests of the pupils and support the PE curriculum.
Physical activity based trips are often offered as rewards at the culmination of each half term with swimming and outdoor and adventurous activities such as gorge walking and mining always a popular choice.
