Following formal consultation with our stakeholders, including parents, staff and governors, we are delighted to inform you that Kilgarth School and Gilbrook School will now be working closely together as a Federation, under the name of The Aspire Schools Federation.  We will be sharing a joint Principal, Mr Steven Baker and one merged Governing Board. Both schools have a shared vision to achieve educational excellence through working more closely together although each school will retain its own name and identity. Our new website is currently under development.

Rules not Sanctions

‘We do have rules, we just don’t have sanctions’ Over the last 6 months we have been working closely with Dr Alice Jones and her colleagues from the Psychology Department at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Our goal is to devise a better system  to modify behaviour based on pupil responsibility, choice and post incident learning opportunities.  Our new system is being trialled this week and is based on cutting edge neuroscience and backed by a comprehensive rewards system. Monday and Tuesday were team building days for the boys in their new houses – they had great fun with various challenges and activities including the Cube Challenge, Slip ‘n Slide and Crossbow Fire Challenge!   It’s back to lessons today with new daily Personal Achievement Sheets for each pupil and a rewards system based on the new houses.  Kilgarth School has been named as a leader in people management practice globally, having been shortlisted in the Gold Employer of the Year (0-49) category in the second annual Investors in People Awards. The Awards, which received over 400 entries internationally, celebrates the best people management practices amongst Investors in People accredited businesses. Winners are announced at a spectacular awards ceremony and dinner at Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, the Tower of London, on 24th June 2015. You may recall last May when Kilgarth School was awarded with an unprecedented three Silver Awards in the Pearson National Teaching Competition for: Outstanding School Team of the Year led by Mr Steven Baker Teaching Assistant of the Year , Mrs Helen Pullin Outstanding New Teacher of the Year, Ms Jane Westlake. This Sunday evening, 26th October, our Kilgarth Silver winners will join fellow Silver winners at the UK final. The event will be held at London’s Guildhall where a Gold Award will be identified from each of the 10 categories.  The ceremony will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC. Award winning conference, Inclusion for All – Preventing Homophobic Bullying & Language in Schools, will be held for the first time in the North West at Weatherhead High School, on Monday 31st March 2014. This one day event, in collaboration with Weatherhead High School, will be hosted by Shaun Dellenty, a leading educational professional on issues surrounding homophobic bullying. Shaun, a Deputy Headteacher of Alfred Salter Primary School in London, is an inspiring and motivational speaker who has presented at anti-bullying, Stonewall & NCTL events. Shaun has supported the NCTL, Department for Education and Stonewall in developing strategies for tackling homophobia in schools. In 2012, Shaun was nominated for a ‘European Diversity Champion Award’ and has been voted one of the ‘101 most influential LGBT role models’ in the Independent on Sunday Pink List 2012 and 2013. The session will begin with a talk from an Ofsted-seconded Headteacher to give the day an inspection viewpoint around the section 5 additional guidance ‘Exploring the school’s actions to prevent & tackle homophobic & transphobic bullying’, followed by Shaun’s training on how to combat and support your staff to become more confident with such issues.
