Board of Governors

Board of Governors

Many people may view governors as being a rather remote and distant group of people who perform vague roles within the life of a school; this overview may shed a little more light on what is an interesting and important role within our school.

We are fortunate at Kilgarth School to have a very experienced and supportive Governing Body whose members give their time freely to enable the school to function well.  These people have been carefully selected for their skills and experience and the fact that they believe in the ethos and aims of our school, in short they become part of the team.

Governors working with the Headteacher determine the long term aims and goals for the school.  They monitor and support all aspects of school life.   They are also responsible for recruiting and appointing the Headteacher and Senior Management Team, overseeing financial management and determining development priorities.

Understandably there are several committees within the Governing Body, including:

  • Finance
  • Personnel
  • Pay
  • Pupil Well-Being and Attendance
  • Policy Development
  • Curriculum.

Members of these committees join the Governing Body with considerable experience in these areas and are able to enrich the school by bringing their skills together with a wider perspective.

There are different categories of governors and these include those appointed by the Local Authority, from the community, parent governors and staff representatives.

We are fortunate that all our governors believe in the aims and ethos of our school and that they embrace the vision we have for the future.  Our parent governors play a very important role by helping to ensure that we are taking full account of the views and feelings of parents

Committees meet regularly and the full Governing Body meets each term, additionally meetings are held between the Chair of Governors and Headteacher every week to discuss school developments.  Other staff are frequently consulted and supported in many ways and are able to ask for support at any time.

In any Ofsted Inspection an assessment is made of the way in which a Governing Body functions and, following our last inspection, it was noted that the headteacher and his senior team are supported by “an exceptionally skilled and experienced governing body.”
